You have to close and restart the program at the start of each level, which can be a dealbreaker for some.
set com_engineHz "165"
Mostly the game works fine (aside from refresh rate, and even that's no big deal), but when switching levels, the next level is completely black except for light sources, rendering the game unplayable; quitting and restarting the game solves this problem... until the next level.
Despite my PC being much higher spec than when the original version of this game was made, it can't seem to get anywhere near my monitor's 165Hz refresh rate, FPS being at most around 110, though the game itself detects 165Hz as a potential speed along with 60Hz.
WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=4:0,2,4,6 %command%
Some sections of the game, including the sandstorm scene and hiding from patrolling robots, somehow maxed out my CPU; Steam discussion indicated this happens to some Windows users as well (apparently it's due to moving meshes), and changing core affinity seems to have solved the problem immediately, as my PC's fans are no longer blowing loudly!
Works fine without crashing, but hardware safety is also important, so if your CPU is at risk of melting in some parts of the game, CPU core affinity should help.
