Installed xact using Protontricks, change Windows version to XP, and turned off UPlay in-game overlay results in a game just as playable as it is on Windows.
Running this game with add-ons using Proton is a better experience than playing the native Linux version with add-ons.
Occasionally, the audio is perfect but most of the time the audio crackles which doesn't bother me too much most of the time but it can definitely bother a lot of people.
Extremely janky with switching from Fullscreen to Windowed mode. Game restart is a must.
Game may crash when changing maps. I have experienced more frequent crashes on Proton 5.0 so I had to switch to 4.11 which made the game more stable.
I recommend playing this game on Proton instead of Linux native because the add-ons are less broken in the Windows version and it doesn't suffer from LUA panic out of memory crash issues when playing in certain maps unlike the native Linux version.
Dynamic shadows from projected lights (like flashlights and lamps) do not work when the game is running on Proton 4.11. Proton 5.0 brings back dynamic shadows so you may want to consider using that if you want to make ragdoll posing pictures that involves proper lighting w/ shadows but the game running under 5.0 may crash later on during gameplay (based on my experience).
Not a flawless experience but it is better than the Linux native version if you want add-ons. I would give this a "Silver" rating. If you don't want add-ons, then just stick with the native version.
December update broke the game on Proton
Launching the game results in the "Steam Error: No SteamUGC" error message popping up and crashing the game on startup. Native Linux version can run but the native version is garbage. Literally unplayable.
Unable to interact with menu and grabbing objects and ladders do not work
The game can launch and run fine but there are two glaring issues with this mod:
- The in game menu cannot be interacted with in VR. You can point the cursor but you cannot select things. Using the mouse on the regular menu on the game's window does work.
- Cannot grab objects like props and ladders in this game. This is can be a deal breaker. The game would be effectively softlocked at Red Letter Day where you would have to plug the teleporter in and it's impossible to do that if this grabbing functionality is broken. I have not tested reloading weapons but I feel like you may need to enable automatic reloading if you're going to skip to Route Canal. You will also have to switch to stick climbing ladders and automatic item pickup.
I have tested this on Proton 7.0, Proton Experimental, and Proton GE 7.22 and they all wield the same results.
It would probably be best to wait until the game gets updated as this mod is in public beta at the time of this report.
Works Very Well. It's important to note that it's recommended to run this game under Proton version 3.16-6 or newer as older versions of Proton have issues with the game's audio.
No notable issues. I had issues before where the game would crash after launch during the loading screen but that is likely because the game is in Alpha stage so that doesn't really have anything to do with the fact it's running on Proton. That issue is gone after verifying integrity of game files.
