Following the instructions in previous reviews, I disabled the UPlay overlay, set it to offline mode and the campaign runs great.
As of the latest update, the game's performance has increased quite a lot and VRAM usage has been optimized. There are still some graphical bugs but none that appear to be specific to Linux. Overall the game is still in alpha-stage development and bugs are to be expected.
Played multiple missions and a short campaign. Everything worked out of the box, no tweaks needed. Didn't experience any crashes, even after playing for more than an hour.
Black screen after alt-tabbing out and back in but was able to fix that by changing renderer to OpenGL in Game.xml. Works perfectly otherwise.
After installing wine-mono the game ran perfectly, the only problem is that it doesn't close properly, ends up as a zombie and requires killing Steam to no longer be shown as running.
Multiplayer was not tested.
Game runs perfectly, singleplayer and lobby multiplayer worked well. However the connection to the ranked multiplayer servers seems not to work.
Game runs perfect out of the box but is slower when it can't allocate about 3GB of VRAM.
Multiplayer not tested, everything else works perfectly.
I've managed to run it using Proton and written a short guide here: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/ayxrdl/how_to_run_space_engineers_directly_from_steam/ I'm getting the same issues as noted by the reviews below but at least the game runs at all! Joining a server and automatically downloading mods also seems to work fine.
As previously mentioned, installing dotnet472 and faudio compiled with ffmpeg support is all that's required to get the game to run. As of Proton 4.2-4 the game actually runs quite a bit smoother. The stuttering is still there but it definitely feels a lot less bad. The terrain bug also seems to be gone!
I followed the manual guide at https://github.com/Linux74656/SpaceEngineersLinuxPatches
Alt-Tab is broken but opening the Steam overlay and alt-tabbing does allow you to click outside of the game.
