Not being in fullscreen seems to sometimes help a bit. It requires multiple atttempts (~8) but if you manage to actually start the game then it runs flawlessly.

If I press the win key Ubuntu will (after some time) show an overview of the windows upon which the game is able to progress all the way to the accessibility menu. Moving the window back into focus puts you back into a stuck state as it doesn't seem to react to any user input.
