The screen had a bunch of black boxes appearing in a checkerboard pattern in several places. This went away when I changed the resolution in the configuration files to match my monitor.
I opened the file ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Age of Mythology/Users/Default.prf and changed the following:
<resolution>1920</resolution>
<resolutiony>1080</resolutiony>
Like I mentioned before, there were black checkerboard patterns across the screen, but I was able to make this go away by changing the resolution settings.
The game would not run at all until I switch to Proton Experimental. Also, the launcher tends to be glitchy, so I found it better to skip it alltogether.
The game won't start. I tried experimental, 5.13-6, 5.0-10, 4.11-13, and 4.2-9.
Worked almost flawlessly.
When I tabbed off of the game, the screen went black and I had to restart the game. Might just be because I'm using a tiling window manager though.
