Black screen then crash at launch
As noted below, there is an open bug on wineHQ for this game: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30244
The bug has a workaround but I don't think this has been raised as a patch anywhere. This means that theoretically you could clone the repo of a proton fork such as https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom and then create and apply the workaround patch available here https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=63304&action=diff
Unfortunately building my own proton version is a bit beyond my skills but maybe this info will be useful for somebody.
As reported earlier, the game will crash on boot unless you install the mfc42 dll which I did using protontricks with this command:
protontricks 268770 mfc42
There are some graphical issues with the font used for in-game dialogue but the text is still readable.
After starting the game, I had to change the options in the menu to full-screen instead of borderless window and then I could start a new save file. Otherwise the game would crash.
In short, make sure to diable cutscenes and check your controls settings. Some of the text is in a hard to read font.
At first, I tried with only keyboard and mouse but was unable to move once I started a game. Then I tried my steam controller but the input wasn't detected. I went to the Controls page, selected one of the keyboard and mouse profiles and started the game again. That resolved the input issue and I was able to play with mouse and keyboard but the Steam controller was still not detected.
I had to go into the Options settings and set the Cutscene Video Player to Disabled under the Audio & Video tab . The other options, Type 1 and Type 2, both crash the game in different ways. When you start a new game, a cutscene will play immediately so, you must disable them in order to play at all.
