"Powerslide Remake" is the only way to play this. Base Steam version is too broken and GOG release appears to be identical to the Steam one.
The music doesn't play in Steam version, even though it's bundled with the game as MP3 files.
Once again, Powerslide Remake can be used to get music working, but I had to rename the files, covert them to OGG Vorbis and move them in the game's root directory. Not 100% sure that the conversion was necessary, but the forum post I was following suggested it. Car collision sounds are missing when playing the Remake version, though.
Out-of-the-box the game only works in software mode which looks terrible even by the 1998 standards. Imagine setting it to lowest settings and then doubling had bad it looks: it looks worse than that.
Glide mode results in black screen and -forced3d
flag make the game crash when switching away from Software renderer.
Powerslide Remake fixes the issues and adds widescreen & high resolution support.
The source-port also has a multiplayer server, but I haven't tried playing online.

-forced3d
Had the right trackpad click bound to left mouse button, and R4 set to "enter" to skip the cutscene and enter my name at startup
In gamemode the launcher will always be shoved into a quarter portion of the top right part of the screen, just annoying but no technical issues.
The Powerslide logo animation (plays shortly after the Ratbag intro), is not yet included in the pre-compiled shaders and uses licensed video formats. This means it currently is shown as some colorbars (on valve's proton)
You will need a basic mouse and left click in your control scheme to play this game (launcher). Use the launch options "-forced3d" to have the game use the Direct3D driver. This makes the game run and look better (compared to software), and more stable (compared to glide). Set the resolution manually in settings to "1280x800x32" note that 32bpp is to the LEFT of the 16bpp options. In the input settings you can bind accelerate/decelerate to the triggers (have enter bound in steam input to another button). If you want Local Multiplayer between computers, you need to use wine/protontricks to install "DirectPlay" and Portforward as this guide says.
Swapped nglide for dgvoodoo for better compatibility
Customized to my liking
Lowered overall tdp and cores
Launch with or without tinkering results in slow initial boot and problems with video codec. Tinkering as suggested fixes pause black screen. Soft and Glide works. Iwish all the other Ratbag games like Leadfoot and DTR came to steam.
The in-game music doesn't play.
Setting the game to GLide2 breaks when pausing in the middle or finishing a race. The menu doesn't appear when it's supposed to. Everything works fine in Software mode.
