One has to force a compatibility layer for Steam to download the Windows binaries as UWE discontinued support for native Linux as of Patch 329.
One also has to disable Steam overlay in-game because opening the Steam overlay breaks the audio entirely (only way to fix this is to restart the whole game), I also recommend to not alt-tab during loading screens to prevent any bugs as well.
I've disabled FSYNC as it seems to have a massive FPS degradation on my system, especially when playing on community servers
Works flawlessly out of the box.

ofcourse it runs really well but the crashes are annoying after 2-3 maps during loading screen it crashes
qdbus org.kde.KWin /Compositor suspend && %command% ; qdbus org.kde.KWin /Compositor resume
sometimes crash when alt tabbing with fullscren or windowed fullscreen
i am on plasma5 so far and i had to turn off compositor with my launch options, but it still crashes during map loads or sometimes with alt tabbing

%command%
Only with non-original Steam package microphone not working>bad rights, set up it correctly or use original Steam package from Valve
On XWayland input lag. X11 great. On pure Wayland not working yet.
Mouse wheel not working in Steam overlay.
Steam set to Proton for this game. Enjoy! MangoHUD, Reshade working(im using Reshade because gamma issues (ingame set not working good) between my low dimmed IPS monitor vs Nvidia).

Had to force a different version of Proton because the 'ns2.exe' executable was missing even after verifying files. But after playing a bit, I deleted the game, installed it again, and this time everything worked on the default settings without any tinkering.
Also be aware of low player count.

don't open the steamoverlay during gameplay, and you are good to go :)
after i opened the steam overlay the sound was gone.

Any alt-tabbing while the game is loading (eg. changing map) crashes the game
-verbose 1 -fulldmp
Official matchmaking game server performances are low (i know ... its still in beta)
To get the max out of the game some tinkering is required.

Some slowdowns because my GPU is underpowered.
On my computer, the native Linux version would not run, but the Windows version works okay with Proton.
Works flawlessly out the box
cuts out in steam overlay
Gets stuck on "Downloading mods". Some mods just wont install. Gets stuck on "Authenticating" despite the console saying authentication complete. Retrying a few times gets past it.
Frequently get stuck on "Downloading Mods" and "Authenticating"
Love this game and it continues to be updated!
KDE composition had issues with the game, the game window would compress to show the task bar. Once I turned it off (Alt+Shift+F12) it was fine.
Runs almost perfectly after switching to Proton 5.13-6. There are a few minor graphical bugs that don't affect gameplay.

Missing executable
Game does not run out of the box.
ns2.exe is missing. I verified the files.
Works flawlessly
VAC

Only thing that doesn't work, is the tutorials. Watch a few YouTube videos instead and/or try to Rookie servers first.
crash on server join
Game runs very well, except when you want to create your own local game (training, or listen-server game). The game hangs when you do that.
Whenever you create a listen-server game (training, or any local game), the game hangs.

Black screen and crash
Tried with 5.13-1, 5.0-10 and 4.11-13.

Works but with issues
Had to force to a proton version or it wont run, would freeze on marine training when selected, Proton 5.0.9 will be at 1 frame (use proton 5.9-5-GE-ST for example for good fps) but would have good fps
Could not watch introduction video. When trying to rewatch it looks like some sort of file browser is overlay above the game menu. Audio was present.
Additionally could not launch any training games. Trying to enter training results in the game freezing up without any progress.
If you can't get the game to work, or are getting an error that NS2.exe cannot be found, I recommend trying to force Proton 5.0-9. I was getting a few errors, but forcing Proton 5.0-9 fixed all of them.
Works out of the box with Proton 5.0-9

Wasn't playable until Proton 5.08 for me. Now I'm getting around 100-180fps at 1440p (with all graphics low). Which is perfectly playable!
The Tutorial is still not working with proton. Which might be a little annoying for new players.

With proton 5.08 the serious performance issues that rendered the game unplayable in previous versions seem to be gone.
I get around 80-100 fps at 1440p and all graphics on low. Didn't play it on Windows for years, but i feel like my machine could do better.
The Tutorial is still not working with proton. Which will be a little annoying for new players.
Runs flawlessly. Installed it. Set to the Linux BETA. Set to Proton 5.0-7 Run's really well.

Terrible performance degradation. Unplayable.
Unplayable hardware lag. Turning the character caused significant drop in performance (down to 1 frame every 2 secs maybe). Everything has been set to minimum or off to no avail. Also tried windowed-fullscreen like another report below was suggesting, as well as restarting. No change.
You HAVE TO force the use of SteamPlay compatibility tool in the game properties, or else it thinks the game is a Linux game but trying to launch the Windows executable at the same time (producing the executable not found error others report). After ticking the box in the game properties, the game launches by creating a prefix like any other SteamPlay game.
FSync causes lower FPS.
Works great with Linux client selected.
Had to select the Linux client from the Beta options within the Steam client, seems to default to the Windows version, but this generates the 'cannot find ns2.exe' error seen by others.
