Basta selecionar a versão do Proton nas propriedades do jogo (ou definir globalmente), instalar e ser feliz. Testado no Proton estável (9.0-2).

por padrao uso o Proton Ge, nao testei sem ele, entao recomento usar!
Usei o Proton GE8-9 em funcao do Metal Slug 1, acredigo que nao é necessário mas de qualquer forma funcionou bem.
Metal Slug 3 ainda nao funciona no meu ubuntu : (
Initially tried running it with 8.0-3, Experimental and GE-Proton8-8. Got some frame drops and glitches in the audio (timing seemed off), but otherwise worked fine. Probably better played on a Neogeo emulator.

Performance dips during the whole playthrough
The persistant stutter isn't really easy to ignore making the playing experience rather poor.
In testing, the game has a persistant, hard stuttering problem that makes gameplay rather difficult.
I played Metal Slug X with the default Proton selection with no forced compatibility checks.
Didn't experience a single issue.
BORKED BUT FIXED
Don't run the game from a NTFS directory (Windows installation drive/folder) neither install Proton in it. After I moved the Game and the Proton Tool to the Linux directory it worked.
it doesn't work on Proton 5.0-7
with Proton 5.0-7 I get "an unknown exception has ocurred.". But it works on Proton 4.11-13 after ignoring the 3 warnings
Finished the game, no problems.
When starting the game, you have to press Ignore three times on a warning dialog. The game then starts fine.
Skip the errors and the game will run. The game lags when there is too much stuff on the screen. But, it could be my PC, though.

I don't know if the problem only occurs with me or with others. Just click a button on the keyboard or move the mouse to fix it. I had framedrops in hectic situations. But playable.
