To me as a regular consumer, it seems like the game has high system demand for what you get. I suspect this is simply the fault of the game though and not proton related but I cannot be sure. On my low end card, RTX 3050, I get 18-24fps average on highest settings or 60+fps on lowest settings. The game is fun and I'm enjoying playing it.
The steam deck's fan runs extremely hard at all points of this game. I recommend changing all graphical settings to low but it likely doesn't make a difference and the steam deck continues to be extremely burdened at all times.
Graphically everything functions fine besides low framerate. On lowest graphical settings, fps holds fairly steady at 19-20 fps which is still technically playable due to being a chess game, but definitely choppy/sluggish and the majority of people will not tolerate it.
As a regular consumer, it seems like the kind of game that could be better optimized. The performance requirements seem too high from what I would expect.
