Works perfect out of the box, provided you set the setting variables in CFG.TXT, outside of pausing completely when out of focus
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 PROTON_NO_D3D10=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 SDL_VIDEO_MINIMIZE_ON_FOCUS_LOSS=0 gamescope -w 2560 -h 1440 -f -e -s 1.5 --force-grab-cursor -- %command%
Set the following constants in the game's CFG.TXT file, located at ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/214730/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/SpaceRangersHD/
:
Window=False VSync=False AllowHardwareRenderUnderWine=True MultiThread=True
Game likes to minimize itself and pause completely (including loading) when unfocused
To make the game run in background even when unfocused, install Gamescope. In game's settings, set cursor rendering to "software". Use launch opitons from above, and change resolution to yours.

35 FPS lock, 6 watts TDP lock
Default font size is quite small for Deck's resolution and display's physical size combo. With that said, there's a toggle for font size in game's settings (accessible via game's UI).
Control scheme is a bit funky, but no more funky that that of Worms Armageddon (which is, in my opinion, less intuitive).
Performance is perfectly acceptable for 2D mode. I haven't tried 3D (planetary battles) mode at all, but it is fully optional. There are frame time spikes, a lot of them, but given the game's gameplay nature, they do not distract or ruin the experience.
Battery life is projected to be around 8 to 9 hours with the with aforementioned FPS and TDP lock.
On first launch, game will detect that you're launching it via Proton, and will mention a few details regarding such configuration which may be of note for you.
TLDR: experience is quite nice, given the game's age and technology stack.

No issures - everything works.

Works pretty good
Rarely the game freezes completely, usually in planetary battles. It seems to do it even rarer with multithreading disabled but not completely sure. Not a big deal anyways.

40 fps
Slight crackin of music and some sounds
Frametimes are all over the place, but it is ok with turn base game style
Will need a bit of contols setup for arcade and planetary battles

(GOG version) Works good
Played GOG version with Proton 7.0-1.
Works perfectly now right out of the box
Don't forget to enable multithreading in game's settings.
Works out of the box for me, even the planetary battles. Text arcades in this games are terrific!
Works right out of the box!
OOTB no issues

Proton-6.4-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Experienced same problems as others reported here.... however when I've installed custom Proton GloriousEggroll everything worked native-like without further configuration.
The game runs well, except some crackling audio and major perfomance problems in planetary battles
Game is working fine & stable
Only in planetary battles but they are still playable
Strongly recommend to enable multithreading and disable VSync

Crashes after a few minutes with Proton 5.x
Used proton flags
Game crash if any sound in the game is on and don't crash at all if it disabled. Thirst i thought it is my xonar ds sound card but then i switched to integrated sound card in my motherboard and had the same result.

If you watn to play you need to sound off
Game crashed after 5 minets.
Disabling Esync prevents game from crashing after 1-10 mins of playing. Using D3D10/11 also unnecessary, because game is using D3D9
Cyrillic text does not work if system's language set to English.
To fix this issue, add LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8 LC_ALL=ru_RU.UTF-8
or other Cyrillic locale to launch parameters
Also notice that if you are using Steam via Flatpak, this might not work, like as for me
GPU driver crash
Proton 5.0-3 gave me significant performance boost compared to 4.2-9 especially in arcade mode and planetary battles, but my GPU drivers were crashing for some reason with general protection failure
so switching kernel from native.5.5.6-914 to lts2018.4.19.106-116 helped me
Other tweaks I made in CFG.TXT (in game's root):
VSync=False
MultiThread=True
AllowHardwareRenderUnderWine=True
(add to end of the file)
Music seems fine with quality, but SFX are seems like degraded a bit. Also there's a crackling sound when you quickly drag mouse over the buttons
On some arcade maps FPS lower than 30 or even 20
Initially, I tried to launch with Proton 5.0-3, but game was crashing after 5 minutes of playing, so I felt back to Proton 4.2-9 and then game was totally playable.
I disabled V-Sync and enabled multithreading
I also added AllowHardwareRenderUnderWine=Yes
to CFG.TXT in game root

Pretty much the same behavior as on Windows. Animation may stutter without PROTON_USE_D9VK, which is something caused by the age of the game and the quirkiness of WINE's default DirectX9-to-OpenGL translator. Planetary battles, arcade battles and text quests all work without a hitch. Game automatically detects that it's being launched under WINE\Proton, and tweaks the rest of the settings to run properly by itself.

Disabling vsync really speeds up the game. However, literally reaching the first take-off into space, the game immediately break down. I tried to disable many parameters in the graphics settings to improve performance. But this does not help.

~50 fps in space. Enable multicore and disable vsync in game settings. In file: "/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Space Rangers HD A War Apart/CFG.TXT" add string AllowHardwareRenderUnderWine=Yes. Add PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% as a launch option.

working, 330-350 FPS in space, 60 in 3d battle, 1200+ in hyper
Game Settings (in game):
Multicore --> enable (better fps) vsync --> disable (better fps)
in file: "/home/$(whoami)/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Space Rangers HD A War Apart/CFG.TXT"
add string AllowHardwareRenderUnderWine=Yes
issues:
Alt+Tab --> Black-screen need start "New Game" on real windows, after work fine . 3D battles work with minor glitch in loading screen, work fine after load

14 -16 fps, crashes after 15 min

Frequent crashes can be fixed by disabling Esync. Add PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% as a launch option

Works great out of the box, but it's highly recommended to turn on the multithreaded rendeing option in in-game options (otherwise, FPS slowdown is possible).
3D battles also work (with minor glitch after loading).
Also I have the following libs installed: https://www.gloriouseggroll.tv/how-to-get-out-of-wine-dependency-hell/. But it should work without them, at least it worked perfectly on vanilla wine previously.
P.S.: Previos report was submitted incomplete by accident.

Randomly crashes to desktop during loading screens. Disabling D3D11 and multithread-boost on Proton didn't do anything. With all that being said, this title runs perfectly on vanilla Wine.

Runs at 6-10 fps, no crashes encountered, didn't try 3d battles

Runs, but crashes in a space
