Plenty of server options with lots of people playing. Many servers running mods, if that's your thing.
Had one crash on inital startup after setting username and other settings, but after reloading the game it started right up and I haven't had any issues since. (It didn't keep my username though, so I'll have to look into changing that again).
Works Great

I recommended to use ET Legacy. Guide by Aciz shows how to install ET Legacy and run game natively on Linux.
echo %command%; ./etl.x86_64
A lot of servers use mods.

Old school classic. Fast paced. Old graphics. Many maps, Quick download of maps, many servers to choose from
No issues
Proton 8.0-3 works.

Graphics are older, but the game play is fanstastic. It's been around for 20+ years.
Crashed once on startup, then I restared it and all is well.
You can convert the Steam version to ET Legacy. Goto ET Legacy website to learn more. I didn't try this yet.
Small download so it downloads fast.
10W TDP set
Game managed to download pk3 files for mods from the server I joined without issue
As another reviewer has commented, this game lacks any sort of support for modern controllers. I'm fairly certain this game even predates the Xbox 360's launch, which was probably the first time devs were doing more to add support for controllers.
I'd suggest a mouse & keyboard hooked up to a hub.. Otherwise, you will need to do a lot of tinkering with the controls to get it setup to your liking.
Great to see it works seeing as how their is a native linux version of the game that isn't available through Steam, so that it does work with Proton is nice to see. Would have sucked if it didn't work and that version didn't get released lol
This game has no controller support, so you'll need to customize a profile. This includes doing things like assigning the C button for crouch, X for Prone, Mouse Wheel for weapon switching, etc.
The Developer (ID) recently turned on their official servers for the game. So those are availabel in addition to unofficial community hosted servers. Many community servers use mods or unofficial maps, so be aware of that when selecting.
This is not a sit-down-and-play kind of game. It dates back to 2003 and as such, predates many of the the advancements of today. This means that it lacks controller support, you'll need to set your resolution, and you'll need to customize a steam input profile for it. Once these things are done, the game runs extremely well. The only supported widescreen resolution is low-res, but still looks good on the Deck's smaller display. It's worth noting that this is primarily an online multiplayer game, so there's not much for single player fans.
Attempting to enable Punkpuster fails (as they are no longer around) and crashes the game
Unable to change resolution to have unblurry text
Attempting to change resolution crashed the game
When attempting to change resolution
gamemoderun MANGOHUD=1 gamescope -f -n -- mangohud %command%
Major render device issues. The render target would display in place of the cursor. Although the game displayed in full screen, the majority of the screen would stay black, with the game menus being rendered as a tiny image roughly the size of the cursor and would track the cursor around in place of the cursor icon. Only works with luxtorpeda's proton.
- Not working out of the box, tested with Glorious Eggroll (GE)'s proton ver. GE-Proton7-17 and Proton Experimental shows Major render device issues. The render target would display in place of the cursor. Although the game displayed in full screen, the majority of the screen would stay black, with the game menus being rendered as a tiny image roughly the size of the cursor and would track the cursor around in place of the cursor icon.
- Luxtorpeda's proton is the best way to run this game, since it uses “ET Legacy” as engine. Use the recommended 32-bit of ET Legacy version in order to play in all servers due to compatibility with server mods.

Major render device issues using most recent proton (7.0, 7.16-GE, Experimental). The render target would display in place of the cursor. Although the game displayed in full screen, the majority of the screen would stay black, with the game menus being rendered as a tiny image roughly the size of the cursor and would track the cursor around in place of the cursor icon.
Rolling back to an older version (<= 5.13) allowed the game to render normally. The game launched and played just fine on the older version, though launch options were needed to set a larger window size.
Luxtorpeda is recommended since it uses ET Legacy, which uses modern settings to run the game, including higher resolutions and sound engine

Works as it should since I'm running from ET Legacy with Luxtorpeda.

Disconnecting from games and level changes result in a frozen screen, yet still functional game input wise.
Overall, the game runs great; however, I am not directing that towards the out-of-the-box experience, as I chose to play the game using ET: Legacy, which you can download online.
Yes, you can play the game straight out of the box without much hassle, but you can expect to be defaulted to a non-native resolution, making the game feel like you're playing inside a cardboard box.
If you choose to utilize ET: Legacy, the installation is just as simple as extracting the binaries into the game's directory and renaming etl.exe to et.exe, so it'll launch ET: Legacy rather than the base game.
For whatever reason, disconnecting from games and map changes after a match's conclusion will result in a completely frozen screen, but the game is still fully functional input wise, you just won't be able to see what you're doing and the only way to fix it is to close the game and relaunch it. Other than that, it's a fun game if you like old games like these, and it's nice to see people still playing it.
100% playable, no errors
