Loading screens take far longer than expected for such a simple game (especially given my machine's specs)

I've had a couple of crashes in less than an hour of gameplay. The crash dialog comes up but doesn't report any actual error messages so it's impossible to diagnose :<
Given I'm the only one reporting crashes so far, it's clearly something with my setup, but the lack of any debug log or readily apparent debug options make it hard to figure out what's going on.
