There are several reports with steps to get this running in Proton, specifically from user CasiPeruano. Converting those steps to the Steam Deck was relatively easy, with the only change being how Protontricks is run. Instead of protontricks 1154840 -q corefonts gdiplus it is flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 1154840 -q corefonts gdiplus from the command line.
It took a bit to start up the first time, afterwards it starts up more normally.
