SPCR relaunches as ProtonDB!

October 27, 2018

What started out as a modest Google Docs spreadsheet on August 21st has come a long way. I absent mindedly added a title to that sheet, painfully descriptive: Steam Play Compatibility Reports. Then we kind of broke Google and a web app was born. As reports from all of you started flowing in, It's been both entertaining and frustrating to watch fans of 'that site' on YouTube videos, podcasts, and blog posts alike try to remember the name. A friend of mine jokingly suggested I needed to add 'Pro' or 'Turbo' on the end of it.

As the web app around the reports grew in functionality, it became apparent that this could be more than just a view for a spreadsheet, a grid of data. So I took to building more. Visitors now have the ability to explore the Steam store via SteamDB Algolia calls. They can log in via Steam. And there's room for more functionality as we build a community of hungry Linux gaming.

Well, Steam Play Compatibility Reports, all ten syllables of it, is now ProtonDB! Finally, an easier name to bring up during casual dinner conversation so that you have more time to convince your friends and family to partition some space on their Windows gaming machine. Or format the whole thing.

To celebrate the .com launch, it's also time to land a significant redesign and refactor: A new streamlined look, a rehauled contribution flow, an initial data analysis of reports on the home page (more soon!), and better formatting for mobile devices.

It's been a wild couple months watching Proton continue to improve the experience of the Linux gamer, to watch the reports come in, and to discuss the future with you on Discord. So I'm very happy to deliver this biggest set of changes yet. Please join us on Discord and let me know what you think!

Happy gaming and happy reporting!
