SteamDeck=0 %command%
The text is a little too small to read.
Due to a current SDL bug it's not possible to write text through the keyboard, both the onscreen and a physical one. Using this Launch Options act as a workaround.
The game runs much better Native than using Proton.

Switch to a community layout for controls, there's quite a lot of good ones!
When popping up the on screen keyboard, it will often crash.
I've filed a bug on steam for Linux and gamescope for the keyboard crash, so hopefully it gets fixed.

Works great right away, change controls to "DFStream Deck Shortcuts+ouse Support" for even better controls
40fps/40hz, 11 Watts Power Limit
A little hard to read in a few spots but not a big problem at all
Changed Layout controls to "DFStream Deck Shortcuts+ouse Support" for even better controls and improved battery life with 40hz/fps limit and 11 Watts for Power Limit. Great way to play Dwarf Fortress, especially with this community layout!

Runs beautifully on Steam Deck out of the box. The game has been highly optimized for the Steam release.
Rebind "Main Menu" to Home (View /Select Button) in the in-game Keybindings menu.
If you play long enough (10s or even 100s of hours on a single fort) and build a massive fortress with a multitude of inhabitants, you will likely begin to experience lag. This is not a Steam Deck issue but is a longtime Dwarf Fortress quirk that is inherent in its level of simulation, which will eventually outgrow your computer's capabilities if a fortress grows enough and has enough going on in it. After 10+ hours and a moderately sized fortress, I have not yet run into any lag whatsoever and the game will likely be fully playable to an endgame-size fortress, but I do expect that in the long run with megaproject fortresses Steam Decks will hit Lag Death a bit earlier than larger PCs, depending on which memory version a system has.
This game not only seem to work out of the box but also use all mean of control of the Steam Deck (to change the Z level, the two right trigger below the Steam Deck. Wheel of selection using the left touchpad to choose action. Zoom in / out with the trigger behind etc).
Given the complexity of the classic version, even with a keyboard, the Steam version may need some adjustment but it's well thought to be playable on the SteamDeck, so far I didn't have to plug a keyboard.

set right trackpad click to left mouse click

The text is quite small and there is a lot of it. Tinker with the GUI to lower grid scaling and it's a bit more readable.
Left trackpad is bound to number keys for some reason
Some Steam Deck focused mods/updates for the GUI and controls would be awesome but if you desperately need to dig while on the toilet this'll get it done.
E+C and [+] on back paddles for vertical camera movement and zoom
MIASMA TIME

I haven't gotte into a highly developed game with lots of dwarves yet, but it looks really good so far.
It will be a little more difficult than mouse and keyboard and will require a custom control m, but once you get used to it, it is playable.
Needed to assign some keyboard specific controls to unused deck buttons on back and left touchpad
I was shocked how well this worked out of the box, definitely needs a custom keymapping but otherwise the game boots right up and you can use the mouse to navigate efficiently

Runs on deck but needs tweaks to control mappings for camera controls, specifically to zoom on current layer of map
ran and looks great but you will want to tinker with controls to better fit the deck
Finally a great way to play DF on the go. I'm surprised and relieved to see it work out of the box with no tinkering.
The overall UI is a bit on the small side.
It's a little small, still readable
Text is a bit small by default, but it can be changed in settings. You should also add some more key bindings to the default config, like zoom in / out.
