Just watch the movies outside the game.
No movies
I wrote a previous review about this game and I finally wanted to truly play it. I am currently 5 hours into the GOG version and this game runs excellent.
- There are total 5 movies that are going to come out in a "TV test video" (or blank, depending on your Proton). These movies are easily found in the game folder/MOVIES: 2 of the movies are splash screens, 2 of the movies seem to be the credit with a different background, one movie is the "JRPG pre start menu action movie" and the final movie is an opening and probably the most important one.
I just watched the pre-movie and opening movie before starting the game.
The rest of the game itself runs fine under Proton 9.02. The game's story is told like a Visual Novel, and they all work. So if you want to play this game, just watch the 2 movies and then start.

lagginess and Audio Drops during Proton Experimental Boot
Ok So After Testing on my Garuda Linux Instance I found that the Best way for me to get it working on my Install of Garuda Linux. On Steam Deck its just boot Proton Experimental. Exit Game Change Boot to Proton Hotfix let it boot or Fail to boot and switch back to Experimental to Get Audio.
On my Desktop Machine. At First it would not boot with Experimental. I had to first Boot with Proton 6.8-3 to get in game without the Audio. Then I exited and booted again with Experimental and it worked this Time, but it was Lagging and had audio Issues. Music cut out in Battle. So I then Quit Game Booted with Proton Hotfix and after then Switched back to Experimental to keep the Benifits of the Hotfix.
I have no Idea why this Worked but it did. Again I Switched to 6.3-8 to get the game running in General, then Switched back to Experimental, The Hotfix then Back to Experimental to get the Game running as Expected. Definitely the Weirdest way I got a Game running on Linux.

Seems to need Big Picture Mode Active to boot. Will Need to Attempt that on the Garuda side of this PC as I tested this on a Drive I re-imaged into Steam OS 3 via the Deck Repair Tool.
Also for PC it seems Proton Experimental Gets Audio and Video for the Opening Cutscene Working, while on Deck its Proton Hotfix that does.

Switching to Proton Hotfix now has both Video and Audio in the Opening Cutscenes. Proton Experimental has Video but no Audio

in desktop mode it won't even load the game but on gamescope (aka the Steam Deck's picture mode) everything works
it seems like the videos with all the logos in desktop mode is what makes it crash since they load just fine in gamescope

gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -r 100 %command%
installed LAVFilters to make movies work.
Steam input must be ENABLED, not "Default"
Crashes from ALT+TAB if not using gamescope. (Wayland) When using gamescope, Meta/Super+F to fullscreen.
How is this still "Silver"? Make sure you install lavfilters via protontricks.

Splash screen and movies missing
- Overall, you can get to the menu if you press A (or enter) on the blank splash screens. You can load in the game and it works fine. But there are 6 movies you'll miss, one being a splash screen and another the credits. The movies are WMV and can be played outside the game with VLC. I have attempted a few Protontricks to fix this, but they did not work.
- DO NOT DELETE OR MOVE THE MOVIES: As this will crash the game.
- Otherwise, what little I played of the game worked just fine. Music, controller, Voice acting, combat, SFX and the menu all worked.
- I am not sure if you want to miss these movies, as I never finished this game, but the experience is definitely not a complete one regardless. Also, I am not sure if the in game movies can be skipped or will crash the game, but the intro and splash screen movie did not.
Play at your own risk.

Switch to Proton Hotfix
There is sound when movies play, but no picture. Fortunately, you can skip them.

Switched to Proton Hotfix
The movies are pitch black but can be skipped.
The game is playable with Proton Hotfix.
I can't get main menu. It is black screen. After bypassing the black screen. Finally able to get into main menu. After clicking new game. It crash. I tried it again, it is black screen forever.
frames drops to ~47 by a dialogue cutscenes for a short while
First dungeon totally playable, haven't check others yet.

Blackscreen and no audio on several startup movies
mv MOVIE{,~}; %command%; mv MOVIE{~,}
Some dungeon floors are ridiculously demanding for unknown reasons. In these floors you may see drops to 30 fps and high power draw. It seems to be related to how many traps are on the floor. It doesn't interfere with gameplay, but it's vexing.
The launch option just renames the MOVIE directory to allow the game to run, then renames it back after the game closes. This way if the movies get fixed in the future, removing the launch option is sufficient for them to work immediately. Without it the game stalls on launch and can't even reach the title screen. The only movies in the game are the title video and the ending, and the game just skips them if it can't find the files.
Gets stuck at attempting to display the first cutscene before the main menu. Had to quit the game through the STEAM menu.
Crashes every half hour or so.
Removing the movies folder allows the game to run, but it's unstable and will be a frustrating experience
Unfortunately very unplayable :(
Renaming the movies folder only bypasses the cutscenes issues. The game will still randomly freeze and crash.

the title screen needs 1 mouse click other then that you can use your controller just fine. also don't leave full screen with alt+tab.
i can exit out of full screen but it closes the whole game
The key board and my controller keep't triggering a ''do you want to use _____ as input device'' text box to appear with the word key board or controller popping up in the blank section on the text i was talking about so i needed to use a mouse to click the ''start'' option so i could get into the actual story. but this only happens at the title screen on just one part of it, so the rest of the experience was painless.
not all the logos at the start of the game where showing. it just showed ''Idea Factory'' and ''Dengeki Playstation'' with the rest just having black screens and also the intro cinematic is also a black screen so just keep pressing a.
Game can freeze for good even before end of the first scene :o
Renamed MOVIE folder
Non-playing movies (because of renaming the MOVIE folder) are just the intros, splash screens and credits
Still crashing. That's unplayable for any gamer.
Crashing Every Damn Minute
Must do a custom mf install to run the game. Runs fine with proton 6.3-5.
How to install.. git clone https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install && cd mf-install && WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/837610/pfx/ ./mf-install.sh && cp system32/*.dll ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Mary\ Skelter\ Nightmares
MOVIE directory renamed to bypass video crash
Minor framerate dips (52-60 fps), but nothing too noteworthy
Game crashes immediately if MOVIE directory is not renamed. Game crashes 15 minutes or so in if it is renamed.
I did test mf-install as well as 6.10-GE-1 with MOVIE present. The former caused an infinite black screen on launch, while the latter hung indefinitely on installation of DirectX during prefix setup. I didn't test attempting to migrate an old prefix.
Launches if renaming MOVIES folder as others mentioned. Crashes after a few minutes of playing. Did not detect my controller.

As others have mentioned, the game runs if you rename the MOVIES folder. However, you'll still get occasional crashes while playing. If you get lucky you'll get maybe 15-20 minutes of playtime before it happens. I've launched Steam through the terminal, run the game until it crashed, and nothing was reported (also no crash file in tmp/dumps). So I have no idea what causes the crashing, the program simply exits randomly for no apparent reason.

Crashes to desktop when playing the opening movie. Fixed by renaming the "MOVIE" folder . Game runs perfectly

Games no longer functions properly and instantly crashes even when doing the movie fix.

Crashes to desktop when playing the opening movie. Fixed by renaming the "MOVIE" folder . Game runs perfectly, but without a couple of cutscene videos. No huge loss.
