This game works with Experiemental in Steam. I tried the current version, 5.13-6 like others mentioned, and latest ProtonGE with different types of issues. Experiemental was the only reliable means at the current moment, on the new Steam Deck OLED.
Forcing Proton 5 will prevent Fatal Errors when playing an Away-game in NBA Season. The only downside is a white background in the selection menus.

Sadly no, exhibition on the default court works well, but other courts cause a crash with a fatal error...

Works perfectly fine with the Steam Deck controls or with an external controller. But I've found that after connecting and disconnecting an external controller (specifically, I've tried the 8BitDo Pro 2 bluetooth controller), opening and exiting the game each time, the next time it starts with only the built-in controller, it doesn't detect it anymore.
Rebooting the Steam Deck makes it work again, and probably there are other ways to make it work again too that I haven't found yet.
Filed this updated report to reflect controller use after my earlier report and to confirm the game is still generally great on Deck, after playing through a full single player season and more.
I've only played one game so far, but as far as I can tell, it works just fine with Proton 5.13-6 selected. Using the default version as of this writing, or when selecting Proton Experimental, the game launches, but it won't launch an actual (basketball) game.
Works great OOTB, just needed launch command to fix menu audio and Proton 5-13.6 otherwise Steam Controller wasn't recognized.

Too many crashes…
Sound goes crazy in some menus. It's OK during a match.
Very often crashes at the begining of a match.
If you like Arcade Basketball or NBA Jam then you will like this.
The Menu Background is Missing or just White
Words great aside from music stuttering in the menu's on occasion. Multiplayer worked great as well.
The music in the menus will get out of sync on occasion.

Just add x_audio 2_7 to Native/Bulletin in Winecfg and it works perfectly.
