Removed unsupported audio files to fix music.
No music by default
With the version of Proton 9 now selected by Steam, the game no longer crashes in the intro cinematic. However, it is still missing all music.
To fix this, remove or rename this folder in the install directory:
Tempest 4000\Win7-8\Assets\Sounds\Tracks_xwma
This will force the game to use ADPCM music tracks, which will work fine. You should use the standard (not Windows 10) version when launching. Game seems to run perfectly after this change.

In order to get the music to play, delete the audio tracks in the xwma format located in "/Win7-8/Assets/Sounds/Tracks_xwma/". After that, the game plays perfectly using the default launch options (I don't know about the Windows 10 version).
Default install and run without any changes will see Atari logo play with no audio and game then crashes.
Change to Proton Experimental and atari logo vid with audio will play and game plays perfectly with audio sound fx. Apparently there is some music but I didn't hear it so I guess that's the bit that's broken. Other than missing music it plays great.
Music will not play without following the steps detailed exactly.
Atari.mp4 in both Win7-8\assets and Win10\assets should be renamed to prevent crash on launch
These are the steps I took exactly:
Install the game as standard. Navigate to the install folder and under both versions (Win7-8 and Win10), open the Assets folder and rename the Atari.mp4 video. You can probably delete the videos outright, but renaming worked for me.
Use Protonup-QT in desktop mode (install from the discover store) to grab Proton 6.12-GE-1. Restart Steam client, and choose this version of Proton under the compatiblity options for Tempest 4000.
Profit.
If like me you followed some different steps first, and found that none of this worked, first find the compatapp folder related to Tempest (deck.local\share\Steam\steamapps\compatdata\688140 by default) and delete it, relaunch the game to generate a fresh one, and then try again.
Renamed ATARI.mp4 to old-ATARI.mp4
As long as you rename ATARI.mp4 to something else, you can run the game.
On steam deck, go to desktop mode, load the steam app, go to Tempest 4000 and select the gear icon (Manage), choose Manage, then Browse Local Files.
Go into both both Win7-8/Assets and Win10/Assets folders, and change ATARI.mp4 to old-ATARI.mp4.
Go back to the desktop and click Return to Gaming Mode, the Load Tempest 4000. It will run with or without Proton-6.12-GE-1 selected in compatibility mode - I still didn't get music.

Renamed ATARI.MP4 to something else to skip intro cinematic
Intro cinematic can crash the game, but you can just skip it by renaming the file.

No music
Proton 6.12-GE-1
Tempest 4000 finally starts and it runs well, but without the music, which is quite essential to this game.
No Music.
Proton-GE

Using GloriousEggroll Proton-5.9-GE-3-ST, the game plays perfectly using a wired Xbox 360 controller.
Loaded GloriousEggroll Proton-5.9-GE-3-ST into home/.steam/compatibilitytools.d directory

Works running Windows 7/8 executable with W.I.N.E. 4.13; I found the Xbox 360 controller working on my system. The Windows 10 executable did not work with W.I.N.E. Does not currently work with Steam Proton.

Title depends on Windows Media Framework to play opening video and music playback. (MFplay.dll) While it does not run on Proton, running the title directly in Wine 4.11 results in gameplay with sound effects. Could not get xbox360 controller to work but plays with keyboard.

Win 7 or Win 10 executable doesn't start. Steam reports "running" but nothing happens at all.

Menu that launches before starting the game does not load, causes it to not be able to start the game.

Not launching

Does not work; tried tweaks unsuccessfully

Does not even start.
