changed output resolution for internal display to 800x600
Tried Proton Experimental, and 9.0 down to 4.11. None of them could run the game on my system

When launching on Deck, the game only displays in the top left corner of the screen. Doesn't matter if it's docked or handheld. Open the game in Protontricks, choose the default wine prefix, then open winecfg. From there, choose the graphics tab and set up a virtual desktop of 800x600 (should already be the default size). Apply and close Protontricks. Game works fine, aside from save file thumbnails.
Game only renders in top left corner of screen
No need for Protontricks for the Steam Version. Just go to the game's properties and set the resolution to 800x600. Check the box that says "Set reolution for internal and external display."
The game refused to start on latest proton version, but works with 6.3-8. Has minor artifacts sometimes and saves does not show previews. Apart of that, absolutely playable

Everything works perfectly. Sound, graphics, cutscenes, loading/saving is all fine. Completed the game.

Works fine fullscreen out of the box.

Game works out of the box on Proton with WineD3D (DX8). I copied manually dgVoodoo2, run protontricks GAMEID winecfg, set d3d8 to native and then the game worked on Vulkan with DXVK even when testing it with the new ACO compiler.

Works fine on Proton.

Runs absolutely fantastically. As a matter of fact, the game used to get stuck in Win10 at the first mission and thus way unplayable. With Steam Proton, runs like a charm. The only problem is that mouse pointer doesn't show up in Steam overlay, but that's not so big of a deal.
