PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
it just works

Resolution seems to cap out at 1920x1200, but otherwise the game runs absolutely fine (movies and all) simply by forcing proton experimental.

When videos start I would be thrown out of full screen and the game would minimize. Clicking on it in the taskbar would bring me back into the game immediately
See other reports on unbinding controller inputs
The game would either crash when there is a video or only show a testcard
As others here I tried many proton versions but videos wouldn't show. This is due to a specific codec used by the game that a proton prefix won't have installed by default. You need to install the K-Lite Codec Pack using protontricks or Lutris. https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm Afterwards videos will play fine

I had to unbind controller inputs in init.cfg
because they were messing with the keyboard controls (several actions would happen at once, e.g. jumping and attacking).
I had to disable Steam overlay because it was causing the first intro video to freeze the game.
All but a few of the pre-rendered cutscenes did not work and only showed a stand-in video (this included theatre plays, blood slides and the game endings). You might have to watch almost all of them online.
The game works mostly fine after a few simple tweaks.

Used no-intro mod.
Tried Proton Experimental and older Proton versions, but videos would get replaced by testcards. Switched to GE-Proton8-22, this got videos to show properly but also introduced a crash at startup. I was able to fix this crash by using the no-intro mod (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=595798189). Now the game runs with no issues.

gamemoderun PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f %command%
Voice acting seems quieter (not a massive issue)
Videos used to work for me but currently only show a test card on latest GE and proton experimental, GE doesn't get a test card but the game just crashed after the second into video instead, switched between many different versions listed on the website with no viable fix for videos. Sadly, this doensn't make me feel like finishing my playthough right now.

Had to remove every binding related to Gamepad in data/init.cfg (Starting with gp).
Would not work without tinkering (Would crash after first intro video)
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

Game won't work if the Steam In-Game Overlay is Enabled.
Either:
A) Disable the Steam Overlay or B) Play the game through Steam Big Picture mode
No need to change the launch command at all. (I imagine this is not a problem for Steam Deck users.)
By disabling the Steam In-Game Overlay you shouldnt need to launch the game with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%, game will work just fine and the Intro videos will play without freezing or crashing.

Works fine out of the box

Intro video crash codecs
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
installed quartz.dll_feb2010 wmp11 amstream devenum
After performing the installation of the components described above the game manages to launch but shows only the very laggy "logos" videos, after that it crashes, I tried to remove said videos from the "data/videos" folder but crashes after showing an error box saying that I need to install "windows media video codec 8" only after removing every .wmv video I can get to the main menu but you basically can't follow the story afterwards
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Went to Steam/steamapps/common/Pathologic Classic HD/data and changed the init.cfg file by removing gamepad inputs (prefixed by gp).
Weird lighting bug in a specific part of the town, does not affect gameplay.
Duplicated inputs, had to remove gamepad inputs to fix.
Great game didn't expect it to run so well on linux but it did with some minor fixes.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
without the launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1" the game doesn't even open
Removed all gamepad bindings (bindings that are prefixed with gp_
) from steam/steamapps/common/Pathologic Classic HD/data
The overlay does not work, so disable it.
Unbind gamepad control settings if you have problems with character control (key duplication).
File location:"Steam/steamapps/common/Pathologic Classic HD/data/init.cfg"
Everything else works perfect.

(GOG version) Works good but no videos
No videos
Played GOG version with Proton 7.0-1.

Appending PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
helped with performance.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
улучшила производительность.
I had to clear the bindings for certain keys via ../steamapps/common/Pathologic Classic HD/data/init.cfg
as keys like CTRL were bound improperly. I also decided to disable controller and all its bindings, as I believed those to be conflicting with KB/M bindings.
мне пришлось очистить бинды для некоторых клавиш ../steamapps/common/Pathologic Classic HD/data/init.cfg
потому что такие клавиши как CTRL были привязаны неверно. Я так же решил отключить контроллер и удалить все его бинды так как думал что они конфликтовали с биндами клавиатуры и мыши.
Working fine with Proton Experimental
Trying to open Steam Overlay just freezes the game.
Besides the overlay problem, Pathologic seems to run good enough (for a 2005 russian indie(?) game).
The game hangs when trying to invoke the steam overlay. The steam overlay does not work. However, the overlay works fine in Big Picture mode.
Игра зависает при попытке вызвать оверлей стима. Стим оверлей не работает. Однако в режиме Big Picture оверлей работает нормально.
The game currently works well with the Proton Experimental version. Videos play, gameplay is stable.
На данный момент игра хорошо работает с версией Proton Experimental. Видео воспроизводится, геймплей стабилен.
Game ran just fine with the latest experimental release.
Game would freeze upon interaction at times
## It's quite annoying have to use Super key to make the cut scenes and the startup run properly, however I could play it anyway.
Used: Proton-6.18-GE-1 https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
Can't play smoothly without alt-tabbing all the time
Need to alt-tab in and out of game to make progress through animations/cutscenes

6.8-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Freezes on animation and fullscreen UI elements, this is easily fixed by alt-tabbing out and then back into the game.
You could play it if you don't mind not having cutscenes.
Cutscenes are not loading. All static screens.
The game fails to load some animations; it seems to crash but toggling the super-key will skip the failed load and resume the game.
Regrettably, completing either or both of the first two paths won't unlock the third. One work-around that works is to use a borrowed saved game of the Changeling path. Saved games are located in /home/user/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Pathologic Classic HD/Saves/
NOTE: It works great with Proton Experimental on 13/1/2021 (latest stable is 5.13). All you have to do is when you start the game on fullscreen, it will "freeze", just press the Windows button on your keyboard to show Window Switcher in Ubuntu and let it play the animation then press the Windows key again and go back to the game. Everything else works without problems.
When the game seems to crash and displays TV color bars, toggling the super-key skips whatever is failing to load (I think) and the game resumes perfectly playable.
The game shuts down before even opening a new window.

Works since Proton 5.13
Game seems to work fine since Proton 5.13 with DXVK (D3D9 to Vulkan).

Game doesn't run with regular proton, but works with latest protonGE-5.9 & using a "no intro mod".
Had to use a virtual desktop set to my native resolution with mouse screen capture using protonfixes for game id 384110. Also had to use this no intro mod or else the game will usually crash on startup : https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=595798189
Only thing that doesn't really work are the videos, audio works really well though and I highly recommend using the no intro mod so that you can go straight to game!
Game not initialized.

install d3dcompiler_47.dll through winetricks. Run with wine directly don't use proton.
I had to set up a virtual desktop with winecfg. 1920x1200 size worked for me.
Cutscenes play, but only audio can be heard. No video is shown.
The game won't run on proton because the game uses some proprietary microsoft codecs for cutscenes that proton devs haven't decided what's the appropriate/legal way of shipping. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/1464
You can install these codecs with the debian packages gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly and gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad.
Remember to install d3dcompiler_47.dll through winetricks

Launches intro video and then black screen and crashes
