Didn't start with Steam and Proton (all versions). GE-Proton was the solution! Steam Flatpak > ProtonUp-Qt Flatpak > GE-Proton10-10
Game will not close after clicking exit, it freezes until you hit stop on Steam.
Game wouldn't launch without using GE-Proton8-32, it would sit on a black screen before closing without reaching the main menu

Two small issues:
When stopping the game, it won't actually end without clicking 'Stop' within the Steam client.
Does not retain screen settings... have to set them again when starting the game each time.
It would probably work without tinkering... I have to tinker a bit to get around issues with XCFE and compositing (I need to do this with all my games).
Steam tried to load it... black screen... back to steam. Tried steam reccomended and forced experimental proton, neither worked.
Still opens and closes right away. does not work at all.
Tried Proton 5.13-5 and 5.0-10. Also tried Proton Experimental, not sure the version. But also did not work. game launched to black screen in 5.13-5, but quits.
