Multiplayer issues aside, the game runs very well after applying the launch parameters. There are minor graphical bugs.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcp70,msvcr70=n" %command%
Enable DirectPlay through protontricks. Required for multiplayer.
3D model textures occasionally darken significantly after minimizing the game. Annoying, but not game breaking.
Loading the stock animal list in the army builder was agonizingly slow, as was loading into a match. This was fixed via the indicated launch parameter.
Attempting to host a lobby via IC Online consistently causes a crash. Joining a game appears to work, although an error I cannot confidently attribute to Proton occurred while loading into the match. I was not able to play. I have not tried LAN or Internet TCP as of yet.
In my case, the launch parameters are essential. The load time issues are severe and detract greatly from the main draw of the game, i.e. unit customization. The problem worsens when using mods that add more stock animals.
My experience after tinkering has been very good. I am an active mod developer and do not feel my workflow has suffered from running the game and its tools on Linux.

Works very well except for long save game loading times
Very long loading times. The time is spent in CPU.
Loading save games takes very long.
installed directplay
without tinkering, multiplayer is impossible
multiplayer does not work wine error 6025 this is a known bug of wine
The game started and plays just fine!

As long as you're not here for multiplayer (Like I was) then you'll have a great experience.
Crashed the first time I changed resolution the first time and crashed when I started on online lobby

I run this game on windowed mode and 1366x768 resolution. But the FPS capped at 60 FPS, it's just works perfectly. No glitch or error. Cool Proton, thanks for sharing!

My cursor was flickering, but with newer versions of Proton, it's fixed. And performances seems to be better (constant 60fps).

No multiplayer (can't host or join a game)

Runs flawlessly.
