Download cnc-ddraw.zip v7.1.0.0 from https://github.com/FunkyFr3sh/cnc-ddraw/releases/tag/v7.1.0.0
Unzip cnc-ddraw.zip into the game directory.
- For steam deck this is /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Nancy Drew Danger by Design/
- For others, it is usually either ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Nancy Drew Danger by Design/ or ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Nancy Drew Danger by Design/
- If neither, then on the game's steam library page, select Properties > Installed Files > Browse to the game's directory
On the game's library page select Properties > General, add the following to the game's Launch Options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n" %command%

This fixes issues with the DirectDraw api. There are other projects besides cnc-ddraw that do similar things, like dgVoodoo, DDrawCompat, DxWrapper, and more on this page https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Wrappers. dgVoodoo no longer supports proton/wine, but the others may work.

Download dgVoodoo v2.79.3 from http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/
Move all dll files from MS/x86 to home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Nancy Drew Danger by Design/
Move dgVoodoo.conf to the same folder, and change the following settings: dgVoodooWatermark=false ScalingMode=stretched_4_3 OutputAPI=d3d11warp
In Steam, set Launch Options to: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="D3D8.dll=n,b;D3D9.dll=n,b;D3DImm.dll=n,b;DDraw.dll=n,b" %command%

The game should be playable.
