Needs to be opened in desktop mode first because it will freeze in the gaming mode otherwise. Once you do are past that, you can play from gaming mode.

HOST_LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%
This game did not launch with the latest Proton Experimental, but going back to 7.0.6 made it launch.
I also had to add HOST_LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%
to the launch options because otherwise it would break right after the start of the game.
Runs perfectly
If HOST_LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%
doesn't work, set your locale to Japanese and kanji will display correctly
Works flawlessly ootb
Japanese text displayed properly
Works perfectly out of the box.
Japanese text shows up correctly without tinkering (provided you already configured your os to display kanji and stuff).
Settings menus didn't seem to display properly, but they still worked perfectly fine, so I didn't need or bother to try fixing it.
Runs perfectly OOTB.
A bit wonky to get the settings to show up (you have to right click anywhere on the screen) but aside from that, the game runs with zero issues.

Proton-7.0rc3-GE-1, replacement Japanese fonts installed with protontricks
Even when forcing the locale to EUC-JP as suggested by another submitter (and SHIFT-JIS too just in case), the Japanese text is mojibaked. I could get the missing font issue fixed very easily with protontricks, but that doesn't mean much when the text is rendered unreadable otherwise, in this case by the wrong text encoding being used. Worth noting though that I'm not quite sure if I generated the ja-JP.eucJP locale correctly as I've never used localedef before and am instead only really used to locale-gen.
Looks like it works just fine if you intend to play it in English, though.
Japanese text is broken.
Works perfectly out of the box without any issues.
Play it without no issues at all.

Ran as smooth as the windows version and fixed the issue with it crashing the GNOME Desktop Enviroment

During the section where it doesn't show ur cursor will only work automatically or hold ctrl to skip
Fullscreen overheats my hardware, especially when animations are present. Sometimes, switch from FS to windowed, every app is transparent at the center of the monitor until the game is on. When it happens, the only thing you can do is closing the game, it won't detect your left click anymore
the game consumes excessive amounts of cpu
installed a bunch of japanese fonts, otherwise the game won't show the text. (I suggest you the ipamincho)
Often, clicking at the center of the window wasn't detected (the cursor as well changed from the game's to the default manjaro's one)
Even with locale and language forced to be in japanese from the launch options, the game still shows corrupted text
Once I got the font installed, the game worked great. There was lots of water coming out of my eyes, but I think that's a feature.
I installed VL Gothic on my computer to get a compatible font
On first launch, there was a grey rectangle in the middle of the screen. Upon closing and reopening, it went away.
Without installing the new font, text was missing.
Right-clicking caused input to be ignored until I alt-tabbed out and back in.
Cannot see main menu, crashes GNOME desktop session after a minute
Had to pick a font as MS Gothic is unavailable, but whatever gothic font you have on your distro is probably fine. I used VL Gothic.

The game works perfectly, excluding some minor and rare sound issues. You have to install the MS Gothic font in the wineprefix in order to make the text displays properly.

Kicks me back to the login screen of my GNOME session whenever I run it.

Kicks me back to the login screen of my GNOME session whenever I run it.

Requires ja_JP.EUC-JP locale to play in Japanese, otherwise character encoding is bork. This can be accomplished by setting the launch options to " LC_ALL=ja_JP.EUC-JP %command% ".

Needs an appropriate font - I used the freely available VL Gothic.

Needs compatible font, Sazanami Gothic works well
