Even doing this works (the game didn't open before using protontricks) it's unplayable, 1 fps in the game menu and no steam proton or proton-ge solves it, and I also tried different video settings and nothing works.

Either the game runs in 8bit colour depth software acceleration mode (and has a hard time accepting the focus; no windowed mode as far as I can see), or you can choose out of a plethora of DirectX 6 and 7 modes, all of which feature an unbelievably slow and erratic mouse. I tried starting a new game once in D7D DirectDraw HAL, but all I got was a black screen with sound.
