Have not experienced any alt-tab issues as mentioned. GOG installer ships with v1.05. Installed using GE-Proton7-28, ran the HD patch mentioned with GE-Proton7-28. Wouldn't launch from swapping the installer.exe path on steam. I had to add a new game entirely and browse back to the newly installed .exe path. Worked after without issues!

I think the easiest way to get this game running is to download both the 1.05 patch (https://www.moddb.com/games/knights-of-honor/downloads/knights-of-honor-v105-patch), then the HD patche (https://www.moddb.com/mods/knights-of-honor-ultimate-mod/downloads/hd-patch-only-310-full-hd-frende), install protontricks if you don't have it. Right click on the patch exes, select the KoH prefix, install the patches, apply the launch options and enjoy the game after that. If you started the game, remember to delete the ini file as mentioned in another report.

Fullscreen not working after alt-tab
The best workaround is to install HD-Patch found in MODDB
Maximum resolution is 1024x720 - Workaround is to manually change .ini to windowed mode
Limited to 1024*768 is probably too small to be enjoyable
Game runs fullscreen but only renders in the topleft corner (old game limited to a low resolution). However, input does respect your actual screen resolution. This makes what you see different from what you actually click on.
As a workaround, I edited koh.in2 to run the game in windowed mode

Other than that, ran as usual. Works well, but runs in a window.

Game does have an issue with mouse pointer but that can be easily fixed. I just alt-tab out and in of the game and the pointer resets to a working position. Also, the game can be run in windowed mode, search the web, there are many solutions. Just remember, this game was released in 2005, there was no 1080p or widescreen support back then. I play on a 27" screen and the game is displayed on a quarter of the screen, but I don't mind that. Everything else works just fine.
