You need to patch the game for games for windows live issues
Games for windows live should be disabled first
Game is perfect but it's an old game that requires Games for Windows Live or it won't start
You should first patch it not to require that app, then it's working flawlessy...
to fix it
Close all steam and proton processes. Delete the proton profile ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/205350 Delete ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection/support/Gfwlivesetup.exe Put the alternate xlive.dll (xliveless) in ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection/BINARIES/WIN32

- Delete this file .../steamapps/common/Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection/support/Gfwlivesetup.exe
- https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/576-xliveless/ Unzip this file into the the game directory located at .../steamapps/common/Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection/BINARIES/WIN32/ to disable GFWL that make game does not work
Online does not work due lack of gfwl

Followed the instructions of Reddit user u/baggyg
"In the support folder delete Gfwlivesetup.exe and then make a copy of:
vcredist_x86.exe
in the same folder and rename that to Gfwlivesetup.exe.
Two issues with this really. One is that you can't actually get GFWL installed... it just hangs on the install script.
Second issue is that if you were to have it it wouldn't work anyway.
I simply did the following steps. Downloaded the two DLL files from https://www.darquecathedral.org/archives/2253 and put them in the BINARIES/WIN32 folder of MKAK.
I then edited the 203350_install.vdf to remove the reference to GFWL. I suppose you could also just remove the executable, copy vcredist_x86 and rename that to the original, so the install script thinks its installed."
With the fixes mentioned it works with no issues

Game install freezes at Windows Live
Broken

I used the same method as the PC to get this to work; basically download the xliveless.zip file, extract it to the Mortal Kombat Kollection BINARIES/WIN32 directory, and launch the game in game mode. Initial screen says to press enter, use Steam+X to bring up the keyboard and press enter there. From there the game pad controls work.
Needed to press 'Enter' on the virtual keyboard to get into the game.
Without doing the above install of the xlive disablement files, the game simply doesn't launch. GFWL for some reason was never removed from this title after it went defunct everywhere.

As others have noted, the Games for Windows Live installation fails or freezes, leaving behind an unusable proton profile. To fix:
- Force close all steam and proton processes.
- Delete the proton profile
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/205350
- Delete
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection/support/Gfwlivesetup.exe
- Put an alternate
xlive.dll
(xliveless) in~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection/BINARIES/WIN32
Online multiplayer will not work because the GFWL service is no longer active.

Needs xlive.dll for start. https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/576-bulletstorm-xlivedll/
Runs flawless withe xlive.dll

Before initially launching the game (Otherwise it will hang):
- Delete this file .../steamapps/common/Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection/support/Gfwlivesetup.exe
- Unzip this file into the the game directory located at .../steamapps/common/Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection/BINARIES/WIN32/ to disable GFWL that stops the game from launching.
Online Matchmaking, Leaderboards, and Achievements doesn't work, but that isn't a compatibility issue because it is the same state on windows.

Fails to install Windows Live component, cannot start the game
Fails on 3/3 install script component - Gfwlivesetup.exe. I tried to install it using system's Wine, eventually is succeeds. But Proton cannot install it. I tried different settings and modifying Steam vcf files but without luck. Tried on two computers. Default install - fails completely. Tried Proton 6, 5 and experimintal.

BLACK screen
i think it can be because DXVK implementation is partial on HD4000

Won't start
even with "liveless" dll patched

Won't start. I'm pretty sure it's due to the windows game portion that this game uses as a platform.

The game runs well if you install the below workaround. The game will crash otherwise.
Guide : The easiest way to get this game working on Win 7/8/10 Both 32 & 64 Bit (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1535129480)

Game will not launch. Does not give crash message.

Crashes during attempt to install "Games for Windows Live"

Use the xLiveLess dll to remove Games For Windows Live (I have to do this on Windows too), and it runs flawlessly.

Needs xliveless.dll patching, just like the windows version does.

Sorry ignore previous report! Install xliveless from PCGamingWiki and it runs amazingly.

Doesn't start. GFWL probably to blame... :(

Performs "first time setup" and attempts to install "Games for Windows - LIVE" every time, then immediately crashes before the game even appears.

Does not start with Vanilla Proton

Games for Windows - LIVE Setup crashes silently during first time setup

Nothing happens
