The game does not allow saving regardless of platform.
With the default Proton version, the game gets stuck in the loading screen after pressing Play. Other Proton versions may work, but I used "Proton Hotfix".

menu boots up fine game hangs on loading screen

i booted up the menu and it worked fine until i entered the loading screen after that it hanged and i had to alt f4 to get it to actually close
