This game supports gamepad controls, but you have to manually assign each input in the options menu ("Run" and "Cling" also act as confirm and cancel in menus - i.e. they should probably be assigned to the A and B buttons).
Once you've mapped everything in the game options, I also recommend the following adjustments to the Steam control layout, assuming you're starting from a default Gamepad template:
- Assign d-pad to the keyboard arrow keys (allows d-pad usage in menus)
- Change right stick from Joystick to Joystick Mouse, then re-assign right stick click to right stick click (the game's default joystick aiming doesn't let you aim diagonally, which the joystick mouse setting fixes).
- Change deadzone setting for left stick to Custom and make these adjustments collectively, this will make left stick movement much more responsive):
- Deadzone range 0-88
- Deadzone shape Cross
- Enable advanced deadzone options
- Increase anti-deadzone to 10000
Vibration doesn't work, even with the in-game option enabled.

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="D3D8,dinput8,msacm32,msvfw32=n,b" %command%
To play just install it and launch, it works out of the box, however the resolution is low. To fix this, use the https://thirteenag.github.io/wfp#coldfear widescreen fix.
Use the command listed above to make it works. Edit the .ini file ine "scripts" folder to adjust your resolution.
In my laptop works beautifully @ 2160x1440 (3:2)

Disabled Gyro

To make the game run switched to the experimental version of Proton.
Most textures are basically transparent.

I installed ThirteenAG’s widescreen fix, which requires a DLL override in the launch options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b" %command%
- When configured to use Proton 4.11-13, the game runs perfectly without any additional tweaks. (The unofficial widescreen fix does require a DLL override, but if you're okay with a 4:3 aspect ratio, the game itself works out of the box.)
- With Proton 5.0-10 or Proton 5.13-6, the game requires the "Use Wine D3D" flag (
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
); otherwise it will crash upon reaching the main menu. With this tweak applied, however, it seems to work as well as with Proton 4.11-13. - With Proton 6.3-7, again the game requires the "Use Wine D3D" flag, but even with this tweak it won't run perfectly. As with several other games, Proton 6.3-7 seems to cause issues with color depth, and I get noticeable color banding which does not occur when using older Proton versions.
Worked out of the box with good performance
The game crashes on launch using D9VK, but that is not the default option on Proton.

Simply downloaded the game, opened it with no problems, modified settings (keys to accommodate Dvorak layout and screen settings) and started a new game, played quite well and was able to save
