To use the shadow fix, dgVoodoo2_79_3 was the only one that worked for me. https://github.com/legluondunet/mlls-tools/raw/master/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2_79_3.zip

Missing real-time Shadows for models
Work well

It's an "out of the box expirience" besides of course that this game has some problems regarding compatibility with modern hardware.

The game runs smoothly on linux. Any problems with running the game are most likely coused by it's age. I had a problem after downloading some texture patches for the game where the error persisted stating "General Protection Fault" however this problem is simply fixed by deleating a directory with the game files. NOT USING THE STEAM UNINSTALL OPTION. Only then it will work.

Can't launch, with a "General Protection Fault" Error
No idea what's going on here, I did a whole bunch of googling, swapping of renderers, command line stuff, cant seem to get it to change. Interestingly, this got to the main menu on my steam deck, but this is a PC report, and this is what happened to me. Completely at a loss as to what's going on here, but I can only bash my head against a wall for so long.

I wouldn't rate it as platinum necessarily, unless the artifacting problem is also present on Windows.
There were times weird artifacting would occur. It can be annoying depending on who is experiencing it, but since it's an old game, I'm not too bothered by it.
Most of the launch parameters listed below are for the Widescreen Fix modification downloaded here. Unless you install this, there is no reason for parameters unless you want to skip the intro with -nointro or use other programs necessitating it. Honestly, this is great as is, the artifacting is the only issue with the game's runtime.

The game runs perfectly fine if you don't wanna tweak anything, however if you wanted widescreen, the DLC missions, different/better textures, you should tweak/modify regardless of Windows or Linux. I used this guide here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1692255530 and without the launch option above game stayed in 4:3.

Works well without additional settings, but you can make the experience even better with third-party fixes

Install this to enable widescreen https://github.com/ThirteenAG/WidescreenFixesPack/releases/tag/sc
The game does not support gamepad. Using the "Steam Controller" community templates to mock the keyboard and mouse works flawlessly.
If the level is loaded from a save after a cold start of the game, the textures of the level may be black. Previously, to fix this, I loaded the "Police Station" level, and then my save, and everything worked perfectly. Then I found a more elegant fix - I installed Widescreen Fix and added the above command in the launch options, and it seems to fix the black textures immediately on cold start, without the need to load the police station. Moreover, after I removed this command, the textures remained fixed. Even after deleting the game and re-downloading, with the removal of all caches, the textures remain fixed. It looks like Steam Deck compiled new shaders after this fix and automatically shared it with the community, and maybe now this fix available to all Steam Deck users by default, without a command.

The linked guide comes with pre-patched .dll files and wide screen fixes.
Shadows won't render properly without DirectX 8 launcher configs. Once fixed it's flawless.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR PANDORA TOMORROW (there's nowhere else on ProtonDB to write it). The linked Steam guide shows how to get Pandora Tomorrow not only running on moder hardware but running flawlessly on Linux.

When you do the 'add to Steam' step, Steam will force use of the default Proton and can't be changed within the game's properties. I'm not sure if it's using the current release as of 4/10/2023 or is using the system-wide designation of 6.3-8 (if in doubt- try both). Game and shadows ran perfectly well.
As for Splinter Cell 1, that works well too once you use -shadowmode=projector -nointro
for the launcher options and Proton 7.0-6.
Installed fixes from this guide https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1692255530, protontricks to add necessary DLL overrides.
The game uses shadow buffers which are not available on modern hardware. Since the gameplay heavily relies on proper lighting, the game is unplayable without the fixes. With fixes it works great.
During cutscenes sometimes Gnome decides that the game is "unresponding" and shows the popup window asking whether to close the game or wait. However, the game keeps working fine and the popup just obstructs the cutscene. A minor annoyance.
The game is so old it requires some tinkering. At least dgVoodoo must be installed (and DLL override added) in order for the game to be playable. Use the guide linked above. Another helpful resource is PCGamingWiki: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Tom_Clancy%27s_Splinter_Cell
Works completely fine, loads up unlike it's native windows counterpart. Playable, enjoyable.
Nothing to add, it just works, enjoy.

changed to windows xp
When viewing enviroments from certain angles all the textures turned black. During some cutscenes the charactars has no textures.
Minor lag and hicthes but nothing terrible but noticable.
You need the Widescreen fix, and the launch command. Optionally two more downloads restore cut content. Worth it. Ps3 textures also work.
-shadowmode=projector
You need to download https://github.com/ThirteenAG/WidescreenFixesPack/releases/tag/sc to fix the resolution and https://archive.org/details/splinter-cell-extra-content https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TXdHKV8aewA8vi0zwA8sHc87gCNh0NiC to get the cut content back. Each zip file has intructions but its all copy and paste, really

You can sometimes get missing textures on loading levels but it either goes away on its own after a moment or you need to load the second level then reload your save.

Graphics didn't render correctly with Proton 7.0 The game crashed every time after selecting new game from the menu with Proton 6.3 --- same with Proton 5.13 Finally it worked fine with Proton 5.0
An absolute hidden gem that works perfectly after you fix the resolution bug
Volumetric lighting flickers with some light sources. I can confirm this is also a bug on windows
If you have a monitor with a resolution larger than 1920x1200, the game doesn't support it out of the box. To fix this, follow usVandal's guide
Issues to deal with whether you are on Linux or Windows.
- A lighting bug associated with newer hardware, for which there is a fix.
- You can't select resolutions higher than 1600x1200 in the settings menu, for which there is also a fix. To fix the lighting issue launch the game with -shadowmode=projector. You can tell if the lighting bug is fixed during the intro screen. If Lambert doesn't cast a shadow on the wall, the bug IS NOT fixed. If he does cast a shadow on the wall, the bug IS fixed.
To get the game to run at the resolution of your display (i.e. 1080p or above) go to /system/SplinterCellUser.ini search for "Resolution" and change that line to read Resolution=1920x1080 (perhaps higher resolutions will work as well not sure) (do not try changing this in game apparently).
More info is available on my website: https://thomasclark.us/articles:gaming:20220118-splinter-cell-on-linux-mint#tinkering-to-get-it-to-run-on-linux
Tinker to solve for resolutions above 1600x1200.
Crashed twice in 10 hours of gameplay.
run in proton 5.0-10
don't work
It runs perfectly with no errors/bugs out-of-the-box.
Splinter Cell runs well out of the box on default Proton, little to no tweaks needed.
Works great with Proton 5.13 and ThirteenAG's widescreen mod, no major issues to report.
Very infrequent flickering from light sources, usually only noticed it once or twice per level. Very minor.
If you do use the widescreen mod, don't change ANY of the in-game settings, otherwise the resolution will revert back to what it used to be. Edit the .ini file if you want to change settings.
Even with the mod, cutscenes will still render in their original resolution.
Great out-of-the-box experience. No tweaking or customisations needed.

Great out-of-the-box experience. No tweaking or customisations needed.

Works great. Only real issue is you might need to enable projector shadows in SplinterCell.ini as the default buffer shadows are broken. That's also a problem on Windows though, so I can't fault Proton/Wine for that.

The game works flawlessly after applying the Widescreen Fix by ThirteenAG ( https://github.com/ThirteenAG/WidescreenFixesPack/releases/tag/sc ) and d3d8to9 by crosire ( https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases ). Cutscenes, though, seem not to work, only playing audio and nothing else but a black screen. Removing "Logos.bik" and "videointro.bik" allows the game to instantly jump into the main menu, allowing to launch the game without having to wait 15 seconds beforehand.

Game runs out of the box. Played it 9 hours and there wasn't any problem. Not need tweak. Runs as native.

Used the shadow tweak and have to hide the panel of Xfce because it showed up during game was running. Despite of that, the game is running fine.

How it looks OOTB: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3QOFfdIWiE "SplinterCell.ini" "ForceShadowMode=0" and it works

Some gliches during gameplay. Need shadow fix.

Works out of the box. Widescreen Fix and HD texture pack with some minor graphic glitches in first level

Edit SplinterCell.ini ( ForceShadowMode=0 ) to enable Projector shadows. The default "buffer" shadows are broken on modern hardware. Can also edit ini-files to enable 21:9 resolutions.

After tweaking SplinterCell.ini ( ForceShadowMode=0 ), the textures / shadows works perfectly. Everything else works out of the box.

Must set Shadow Resolution low, otherwise there'll be lots of random black textures. Everything else is ok.

From WineDB: PROBLEM: The shadow placements may be incorrect. Spot light beams may not appear. Flash light beams may not appear. Ceiling light beams may not appear.
In the game folder go to SYSTEM folder and open SplinterCell.ini file with text editor.
Find block [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] and add or change (if string exists) ForceShadowMode=1 to ForceShadowMode=0
Save edited file.

Some textures render black, including floor and character, however look normally when camera turned at a certain angle
